Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by a microscopic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The mites burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching, redness, and a rash, often in areas like the hands, wrists, elbows, and genital area. Scabies is typically spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, such as during sexual activity or close living conditions, but it can also be contracted through shared bedding or clothing. While scabies can affect anyone, it is more common in crowded or unhygienic environments. Treatment involves prescription creams or oral medications that kill the mites and alleviate symptoms. It is important to treat both the infected person and close contacts to prevent the spread of the infection.
